2002 Jaguar R3-06

The Jaguar R3 was the Formula One car with which Jaguar Racing contested the 2002 World Championship. Launched on 4 January 2002, it was driven by Eddie Irvine and Pedro de la Rosa, both retained from the previous season.

After two already disappointing years, expectations for 2002 were cautious, and unfortunately, the season proved even more challenging. The team later acknowledged that several key errors had been made during development, particularly in the wind tunnel, where inaccurate data led the car in the wrong aerodynamic direction. Despite this, the R3 showed early promise with an impressive fourth-place finish at a chaotic, attritional Australian Grand Prix.

As the season progressed, however, weaknesses in reliability and a lack of outright horsepower became increasingly evident, and Jaguar slipped down the order. Development continued throughout the year, and toward the final races a series of updates began to unlock more consistent performance. That late improvement paid off in memorable fashion at Monza, where Eddie Irvine finished on the podium, securing what would become Jaguar Racing’s final podium finish in Formula One.

Jaguar ended the season seventh in the Constructors’ Championship with eight points, all scored by Irvine. Today, the R3 stands as a tangible reminder of Jaguar’s modern Formula One era, an ambitious project that, despite its struggles, closed with a moment of genuine achievement.
